Utopia in theory may be imaginary and unreal, but we’ve searched far and wide for the people we believe have the best chance at achieving it.

Fox’s UTOPIA is a TV show. But more than that, it's a groundbreaking social experiment playing out in real time. Fifteen highly skilled civilians — all with their own visions of what a perfect society should look like — turn in their U.S. passports and become Utopians for a whole year.

These are not reality contestants. They're real-life professionals we sought out at trade shows and conventions across the country, craftsmen and hunters with the know-how and the can-do to match their strong personalities. They’ve fiercely assessed the world as it is and have drawn their own mental pictures of how it could be better.

Of course they’re all heavily opinionated — they’re idealists. But this isn’t a televised court hearing or cable news stunt, in which opposing parties can scurry away from their perceived enemies once the lights shut off. Our 14 Utopians must resolve their conflicts genuinely, on a human level, if they hope to collectively spin their wheels as a well-oiled machine.

Like each other or not, they’re all on the same team. But it’s not a game …
